Navigating through a big university can be challenging. But between becoming Vice President of his fraternity, joining the Investment Banking club and being inducted into Order of Omega, sophomore finance and biochemistry major Jesse Krantz makes it look easy.
“ I came because it’s a community. There’s opportunities for smaller and smaller communities,” Krantz said of his decision to come to Maryland.
Though Krantz has found multiple communities to join at the University, perhaps one of the most significant communities in his life is his fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi. Since joining in Fall 2012, Krantz was the fraternity’s social chair and is the chapter’s current vice president.
“ I oversee everything internally in the fraternity including every committee and pretty much everything that goes on,” Krantz, who says he enjoys his current position, explained. “ My goal is to make everything more efficient.”
Though Krantz says being vice president is, “ a lot of work,” he is also involved in Maryland’s Investment Banking club in which members are taught about pursuing careers in banking. Fitting, since Krantz says he is interested in pursuing a career in finance.
“ I came into the biochemistry major because I like science. I like knowing how the world works down to the smallest part. I’m looking to go into the finance side of a biochemistry side,” Krantz explained.
Krantz already has experience in his chosen field. Last summer he interned as an analytical chemist at Takasago Internal Corporation, an international producer of flavors and fragrances.
“ I just dealt with determining what people make their products from. I did a lot of experiments to determine what things are made of,” he explained.
Between extracurricular activities and looking for another summer internship, Krantz is also involved academically. The Life & Sciences Scholar was recently inducted into Order of Omega, a Greek leadership honor society.
Although he may seem to have a lot on his plate, sophomore hearing and speech sciences major Allie Levin isn’t worried about him.
Levin, his girlfriend of 3 years, says,“ He’s very hard working and he always dedicates himself to whatever he does. I think Jesse will be successful.”
