Hamas released hostage Edan Alexander to the Red Cross on May 12.  The Israeli-American finally returned home to his family after 583 days in captivity. The 21-year-old, who grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, previously served in the Israeli Defense Forces along the Gaza border before being taken captive by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023.

Alexander emotionally reunited with his family Monday evening in Southern Israel, marking the end of a long and difficult ordeal that fought for his release for over a year and a half. His release comes as a result of recently increased negotiations between U.S. officials and Hamas. Alexander returning home is another step for ongoing efforts to secure the safe return of all hostages and pave the way for potential peace talks in the region.

Believed to be the last American hostage still held in Gaza, Alexander’s freedom offers a glimmer of hope for other families still waiting for their loved ones to return. Edan’s homecoming brought together dozens of supporters and relatives in his hometown of Tenafly and Tel Aviv to celebrate his return.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked President Donald Trump for his ongoing efforts in the hostage negotiations that brought Alexander home.

Israeli officials reiterated their commitment to securing the release of all hostages and maintained military pressure on Hamas. After 19 months of war, the Israeli Defense Forces recently announced plans to indefinitely seize parts of Gaza in efforts to close in on Hamas and establish permanent occupation.

Edan Alexander’s freedom stands as both a triumph for his family and a symbolic gesture in the ongoing, complex negotiations shaping the future of the region. Of the 59 remaining hostages, Israeli authorities believe 24 to still be alive. Alexander’s release is a beacon of hope for their families around the world.
