Chanukah, a Jewish winter holiday also known as “The Festival of Lights” celebrates the Maccabean recovery of Jerusalem from the control of the Seleucid empire.

The holiday, during which Jewish people light the menorah, a ritual candelabrum, takes place over eight days and nights. It honors the miracle of a jug of oil in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem that lasted for eight days though it was only expected to last for one.

It’s a holiday about Jewish pride and perseverance in the face of darkness. This year, with antisemitism at a boiling point, it’s incredibly important.
