On the 3rd anniversary of Oct. 7, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a tweet detailing his thoughts on the day. The resulting tweet has been under fire for what many Jews call insensitivity and the weaponization of a tragic day for Israel.
In his statement, Mamdani initially called Oct. 7 a tragic day for many New Yorkers, detailing the loss of life that Israel faced, as well as the hostages kidnapped from their homes. However, after a relatively short introduction, he turns the tweet around to commemorate the ‘ongoing genocide’ in Gaza. He continues by mentioning the massive death toll, the children killed in the conflict, and conditions of the conflict such as alleged turning away of aid or targeting of journalists and civilians via drones. He also suggested that America is using taxpayers’ money to pay for weapons to accompany these alleged war crimes.
Many Jews have called out the post for its lack of respect and inappropriate nature given the day the tweet was posted. Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the ADL said that Mamdani was “weaponizing the day…to recycle [his] usual antizionist talking points.” Other Jews have also called out the post as a “disgraceful moral failure,” and an attempt to invade a tragic day for Jews (and other Israelis), for Mamdani’s own political talking points.
Mamdani has been consistently criticized for his anti-Israel views, and in some cases, his bias against Jewish and Israeli politicians. For instance, he has stated that he would attempt to arrest the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, while failing to mention or address the arrest or at least condemnation of Hamas war crimes or terrorists. Many believe this tweet echoes those earlier criticisms, to the point that the ADL has now set up the ‘Mamdani monitor’ to track his performance and actions.
